- Spain: De facto prohibition of gasoline and diesel registrations
The European Commissioner for Industry and Internal Market, Elzbieta Bienkowska, has ensured that a complete ban on the registration of new vehicles with petrol and diesel engines by the Member States "is not compatible" with Community legislation.
In a letter in response to a question asked by the Danish Parliament (Folketinget), Bienkowska stresses that Member States have the possibility of restricting the access of cars with combustion engines to urban centers, as part of their efforts to improve air quality.
"Under current homologation regulations, a complete ban on the marketing, importation and registration of new gasoline and diesel cars in a Member State is not compatible with the law of the European Union (EU)," notes the commissioner in the letter. Pick up by Europa Press.
Bienkowska responds, in this way, to the Folketinget's question on under what conditions the introduction of a veto to the commercialization of combustion cars in Denmark could be compatible with current Community legislation.
Faced with this question, the outgoing commissioner emphasizes that as a measure to reduce air pollution in urban areas, Member States have the possibility of restricting access to certain urban areas, a measure that has already been adopted by nine Community countries.
In this regard, remember that other countries such as France, Spain, United Kingdom, Holland and Ireland have announced plans to ban combustion vehicles for the period 2030-2040. "I personally invite you to a discussion in the Council in which I will be delighted to participate," says Bienkowska.
In the Spanish case, the Government apparently reversed this spring regarding the plan it presented last fall, but although it eliminated the word ban, its draft draft National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 that it sent to Brussels keeps it implicitly
However, it highlights the need for the transport sector to contribute to the decarbonization of the economy and advocates a "profound change" towards zero-emission vehicles, something that qualifies as "indispensable."
"The era of diesel and gasoline engines will end sooner than we think for climatic, environmental and competitive reasons," said the commissioner, who recalls that EU competitors such as China and the US are also looking for ways to deal with climate change. through the impulse to mobility without emissions and with prohibitions on combustion cars.

Along these lines, it demands "greater efforts" by European industries to face the challenge of decarbonization and to remain competitive, since, in their opinion, "they are falling behind" in the development of the technologies of the mobility of the future (hybrid, hydrogen and electric vehicles).
