Six-time winner Serena Williams made a big deal with her old rival Maria Sharapova on Monday evening in the first round of the US Open. Roger Federer struggled to get started against debutant Sumit Nagal, but was able to find his form quickly.

The American Serena Williams played strong and defeated the Russian Sharapova in 58 minutes with 6-1 and 6-1. Sharapova made costly mistakes and could not redeem the few break points she received.

It was a struggle between two veterans. The 37-year-old Serena Williams faced the 32-year-old Maria Sharapova, who outsmarted her in the 2004 Wimbledon final. But since then, Williams has always been the strongest in nineteen games. In the sold-out Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, the eighth-placed Williams won under the eye of Mike Tyson, among others, convincingly of the 87th-placed Sharapova.

Both players faced injuries in recent months. Williams had to give up a mutual match at Roland Garros earlier this year due to a chest muscle injury. That was only temporary, because a few weeks later Serena Williams was still in the final at Wimbledon.

Serena Williams became a mother in 2017 and has since been working on her return. Last year she was in the final, but lost to Japanese Naomi Osaka. In the second round, Williams has to face her fellow countryman Catherine McNally.

Roger Federer struggling to get going

Tennis legend Roger Federer struggled to get started in his first match at the US Open. He had to give up the first set against the qualifier Sumit Nagal, but in the end he won the game 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4.

The 38-year-old Swiss was unable to hit a ball properly in the first set, while his opponent, the 22-year-old Sumit Nagal from India, played on wings. As a result, the number 190 in the world who had never played in a Grand Slam tournament, let alone in the largest arena that is the Arthur Ashe Stadium, could easily win a set of number 3 in the world. "I'm trying to enjoy this moment," Sumit Nagal said prior to the game.

In the second set, Federer started to hit the balls a little better and then barely got into trouble. Only in the fourth set did Nagal break Federer's service a few times. When Federer was able to serve the match at 5-4, Nagal fought back. But it didn't help, Federer took his first match point after two and a half hours. However, the Swiss will not look back with satisfaction on this competition with 57 unnecessary errors.

Federer won the US Open five times in a row, from 2004 to 2008. Last year, he was eliminated in the fourth round by the Australian John Millman. This season he played in the final of Wimbledon, which he lost against Novac Djokovic after a historic tie-break on 12-12

Roger Federer will compete in the US Open in the second round against the number 99 of the world, the Bosnian Damir Dzumhur.
