Steven Kruijswijk stepped off Tuesday in the fourth stage of the Vuelta a España. The Dutchman fell on Saturday in the team time trial and got more and more problems with his knee in the last few days.

The 32-year-old Kruijswijk was 51st in the general classification after three rides at two minutes and nineteen seconds from leader Nicolas Roche. De Brabander lost a small two minutes on Sunday in the difficult second stage against many other classification riders.

The climber of Jumbo-Visma de Vuelta had started as shadow leader behind Primoz Roglic. Kruijswijk rode his first race in Spain since he finished third in the Tour de France at the end of July, his main goal this year.

Last year Kruijswijk finished fourth in the Tour of Spain behind Simon Yates, Enric Mas and Miguel Ángel López.

De Brabander is the second rider to get off in the Vuelta. Frenchman Mickaël Delage did not reach the finish on Monday.
