Kiki Bertens plays in the first round of the US Open against the Spanish Paula Badosa. Richèl Hogenkamp was paired to Donna Vekic from Croatia.
Bertens was told on Thursday that she would start the last Grand Slam tournament of the year against a qualifier. On Saturday, all players who have successfully passed the qualifying tournament were drawn into the schedule.
Badosa is the current number 91 on the world ranking. In the second qualifying round she was still too strong for the Dutch Quirine Lemoine in three sets.
Last month, Bertens faced the 21-year-old Spanish at the WTA tournament in Palermo. On the Italian clay, the Dutch won convincingly in two sets: 6-1 and 7-5.
Bertens was placed seventh at the US Open, which starts on Monday. The match between the Wateringse and her Spanish opponent is scheduled for Tuesday on lane 17.
Hogenkamp and Haase are also in action on Tuesday
Just like Badosa, Hogenkamp reached the main tournament through qualifications. The number 208 in the world meets Vekic (WTA-23), a player that is 185 places higher. The game will be played on Tuesday.
It is her third participation in the US Open for Hogenkamp. In 2016 the Doetinchemse made the second round, a year later she got stuck in the first round.
On Thursday it became clear that Robin Haase, the only Dutch man in the single tournament, will hit the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (ATP-21) in the first round. Haase, who is 154, will not play until Tuesday.
