VVV-Venlo has tied Sunderland icon Lee Cattermole for one season on Thursday. Sparta Rotterdam hires striker Joël Piroe from PSV and Vitesse lets defender Rasmus Thelander leave for Aalborg BK.
The 31-year-old Cattermole played more than 270 games in the Premier League for Middlesbrough, Wigan Athletic and Sunderland. The midfielder is taken over free of charge by VVV from Sunderland, which has slipped to the third level in England.
Cattermole, who played for 'The Black Cats' in the last ten seasons and is one of the protagonists in the successful Netflix documentary Sunderland' Til I Die , has been training in Venlo for several days and that went well from both sides.
"The club arrived at the right time. I am very happy that after so many seasons in England I can now start working at a beautiful Eredivisie club in the Netherlands," says the Englishman on the VVV site.
"With my experience I can contribute to the development of this young team. I want to move forward with VVV."
Valckx: "Cattermole is absolute reinforcement"
With one win and two defeats, the Limburgers did not have a great start to the season. Technical director Stan Valckx wants to add experience to the team with Cattermole.
"With Lee you bring in a player who has played at the highest level in England for a long time. In addition to his footballing qualities, his zest for work and his running ability, he brings with him a whole lot of football experience and knowledge of the world of football", said Valckx.
"In turn, our young players in particular can learn something from it. You immediately saw it in the training sessions: Lee coaches a lot and puts the organization down well in midfield. With his 31 years, he is an absolute reinforcement for our selection "
VVV will visit FC Utrecht on Sunday (kick-off at 2.30 pm).

Sparta rents Piroe for one season
Twenty-year-old Piroe had a good season with Young PSV last year with eleven hits in 29 league matches. Nevertheless, the youth international is not currently included in the plans of trainer Mark van Bommel with the main force.
"Despite his young age, Joël has played nearly fifty league games in professional football with Young PSV," explains technical manager Henk van Stee of Sparta, who has decided to record Piroe.
"In it he showed that he has scoring ability and with his arrival at Het Kasteel we increase the competition and possibilities in our attack. It is good for Joël, PSV and Sparta to gain experience in the Eredivisie with us."
Piroe is the second PSV player to play for Sparta this season. The team from Rotterdam previously took over midfielder Dante Rigo temporarily from the 24-time national champion.
In addition, Laros Duarte, who was hired from PSV last year, was definitively captured and Denzel James (Noordwijk), Bryan Smeets (TOP Oss), Jurgen Mattheij (Excelsior), Khalid Karami (Vitesse) and Ariel Harush (Hapoel Be'er Sheva) were recorded.

Vitessenaar Thelander back to Aalborg
A little earlier on Thursday, Vitesse announced that defender Thelander will be leaving Arnhem after just one season. The Dane returns to his homeland, where he will play for Aalborg.
The 28-year-old Thelander came from FC Zürich last summer. Partly due to a serious ankle injury, he played a supporting role at Vitesse. The Dane also played for Aalborg between 2012 and 2015.
Earlier this summer, nine other players left Vitesse behind. For the time being trainer Leonid Slutsky welcomed six newcomers.
Sparta and Vitesse have a good start to the Eredivisie season with seven points from the first three games. The team from Rotterdam will visit PEC Zwolle on Sunday and Vitesse will play Heracles Almelo a day earlier.
