Richèl Hogenkamp took the first step on Monday to participate in the US Open. The Dutch number 208 of the world survived the first qualifying round without a loss of set.
Hogenkamp won 6-4 and 7-6 (5) against the Swiss Ylena In-Albon, who occupies the 234th position in the world ranking. In the next round, the Russian Varvara Gracheva (WTA-184) is waiting.
The 27-year-old Hogenkamp was present eight times at a Grand Slam tournament, twice at the US Open. In 2016 she reached the second round and two years ago she was immediately eliminated in New York.
Players participating in the qualifications must win three games to reach the US Open. In addition to Hogenkamp, Lesley Kerkhove, Arantxa Rus, Bibiane Schoofs, Quirine Lemoine and Tallon Griekspoor are giving a shot at a ticket.
The US Open starts in a week. Among the men, Novak Djokovic defends his title and among the women, Naomi Osaka won last year in a much-discussed final against Serena Williams. The participation of the injured Osaka is still uncertain.
