Frank de Boer has won his first prize with Atlanta United. 'The Five Stripes' won 3-2 from Club América on Wednesday-evening (local time) in the final of the Campeones Cup, in which the winner of the Mexican tournament Campeón de Campeones takes on the champion of the United States.
De Boer's team had an excellent start for their own audience and took the lead in the fifth minute via Emerson Hyndman. Renato Ibarra (ex-Vitesse) brought the Mexicans to the same level shortly thereafter.
Atlanta didn't manage to get many chances in the first half and got a damper after the break, after Roger Martínez made it 1-2. The deficit was cleared in a five-minute period by goals from Jeff Larentowicz and club top scorer Josef Martínez. The latter used a penalty kick.
A red card for Bruno Valdez helped Atlanta get into the saddle, after which the De Boer team quietly played the numerical surplus.
De Boer is in the race to win even more prizes with Atlanta United, where he is busy with his first season. His team is second in the Eastern Conference and still plays the American cup final against Minnesota FC on August 28.
