Cristiano Ronaldo scoffed at the achievements of his old rivals Lionel Messi in a television interview when he answered a question about the difference between the players and the constant comparison with Barcelona captain Messi, after years during which the two players dominated individual awards in the world.
Ronaldo, 34, believes he still has an advantage over the 32-year-old Messi because of his record in the Champions League, which the Portuguese have achieved 5 times to 4 only for the Argentine.
"The difference between me and Messi is that I have won the Champions League with different teams," he said, referring to his 2008 continental title with Manchester United, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 with Real Madrid.
"I have been the top scorer in the Champions League six times in a row. There are a lot of players who have won the title five times," he said.
"Messi is an excellent player, not only in the memory of the Golden Ball but also with him staying on top every year, like me."
Messi has never played for any team other than Barcelona, having won the Champions League in 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015.He, like Ronaldo, has five golden balls.
