Sweden youngster Rebecca Peterson continues to take fine victories, with two vekocrs remaining for the US Open. In late July, she knocked out 8-ranked American Sloan Stephens in Washington's WTA tournament. Tonight, she followed up that scalpel by defeating British Johanna Konta, 2-1 in sets, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.

In the first set, it was the 74-ranked Petersons serve that was the key. She only lost three points in her own serve in the opening set and received 70 percent of her first serve.

Konta came back and broke to 4-2 in the second set. Peterson had a break ball to level at position 5-3 to Kointa, but after the British saved it, she was able to take home the second set.

Took a lead

In the decisive set, Peterson got a nightmare start when she dropped her serve immediately, but then managed to take four straight games up to 4-1, and had five break opportunities to take a 5-1 lead. Instead, Konta could take home the game and make it to 5-5. Peterson was then able to take the game home 7-5, after just over 150 minutes of play.

- I'm happy with the result. I'm happy with my game, but I want to go further and play better, Peterson tells wta.com.

24-year-old Peterson, who qualified for the main tournament, will face Russian Veronica Kudermetova in the second round.
