• World Cup Marvin Bagley leaves the US team

Toronto Raptors US baseman Kyle Lowry was ruled out Monday to join the national basketball team that will play the World Cup in China for a thumb injury.

Lowry underwent surgery on his left thumb in July and hoped to recover to play in the US team's attempt to win his third consecutive World Cup title. "I was hoping to be ready and have the authorization," Lowry wrote on Instagram.

"I expected to be available in time to help my country to look for gold this next tournament. I love to play, but I have to stay out and support the team from home," the base added.

US coach Gregg Popovich is also waiting for news about the physical condition of Boston Celtics base Marcus Smart , who missed an exhibition game in Las Vegas on Friday because of a muscle injury.

The United States squad will resume training in California this week, with an exhibition game scheduled against Spain on Friday in Anaheim (California) .

The Americans will fly to Australia the next day, where they have planned two friendlies against the locals and against Canada before the World Cup begins on August 31.

Star LeBron James said in April that he would not be available and, more recently, NBA stars James Harden, Anthony Davis and Kawhi Leonard chose to leave the US team, preferring to prepare for the NBA season.
