Alexander Albon is Max Verstappen's new teammate in the second half of the season. Red Bull Racing puts Pierre Gasly back to Toro Rosso.

The Austrian team announced this on Monday. Gasly had a difficult year with Red Bull, during which he did not come close to the performance of Verstappen.

The 23-year-old Thai Albon is busy with his first season in Formula 1. He has grabbed sixteen points, with which he is fifteenth in the World Cup position.

"Red Bull is in the unique position to have four talented drivers under contract, who can be rotated between both teams," writes Red Bull on his website.

"We will assess Alexander's performance over the next nine races and then make a decision as to who will ride alongside Verstappen in 2020."

Gasly disappointed last six months

Gasly was promoted from Toro Rosso to Red Bull in the winter to succeed Daniel Ricciardo who had left for Renault. The 23-year-old Frenchman managed to collect only 63 points, Verstappen does significantly better with 181 points.

Gasly now returns to Toro Rosso, where he spent the first year and a half of his career. He will form a teammate there with the Russian Daniil Kvyat.

Gasly and Albon keep the World Cup points that they have collected over the past six months. The next race is on September 1 in the Belgian Spa-Francorchamps.
