The Tesla Model 3 is the best-selling electric vehicle so far this year in Spain, with more than 1,050 units sold. According to investigations, businessman Alexey Tretyakov was driving his Model 3 when he hit a crane that was servicing a vehicle near Moscow. According to local newspaper Zvezda, police believe the vehicle was active in the Autopilot, the brand's semi-autonomous driving system. A technology that has caused controversy and that, despite guiding the vehicle on highways, requires the user to have their hands on the wheel.
Among the incidents dated, in March a driver died in the US after crashing into a truck while driving with the Autopilot activated. Shanghai and Hong Kong recorded two Tesla model fires, one of them while the vehicle was parked. Despite these problems, Tesla argues that it is safer to drive with the Autopilot activated than without it and says he backs it up with quarterly safety reports.
In its latest document, the manufacturer claimed that a Tesla was set on fire for every 190 million kilometers traveled between 2012 and 2018 , comparing it to the global one of a vehicle burned for every 39 million kilometers traveled in the US.
