Rafael Nadal, top ranked in the ATP tournament in Montreal, got an easier trip to the final than expected. Frenchman Gael Monfilis was forced to pull out of the semi-final against Nadal after sustaining an ankle injury.

Monfils injury occurred in the second set in the quarterfinals against Roberto Bautista Agut, which Monfils eventually won. Ankle injuries have been a recurring problem for the Frenchman who does not want to risk anything in the semi-finals.

- Rafa knows I love these matches. I play tennis for those moments, for the big games, but not this time. I've been fighting against the injuries all year and it's probably safest not to play tonight, "Monfils said after the decision.

Rafael Nadal is allowed to stand by the walkover against Russian Daniil Medvedev, who beat compatriot Karen Khachanov in two straight sets in her semi-final.

The final is played at 22.00 Swedish time.
