Mathieu van der Poel has won the short track race in a world cup mountain bike for the fifth time this year. The European champion was the strongest in Lenzerheide in Switzerland on Friday.
The 24-year-old Van der Poel narrowly stayed ahead of Brazilian Henrique Avancini by shaking him off in the final meters. The podium was completed by the Swiss Nino Schurter, who finished third in five seconds.
Earlier this year, Van der Poel also won the short track races in Albstadt in Germany, Nové Mesto in Czech Republic, Les Gets in France and Val di Sole in Italy. Last week he also booked his second World Cup win of the season in Val di Sole.
Van der Poel aims to take gold as a mountain biker at the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year. He will be leaving the World Championship later this year, because he prefers to participate as a cyclist in the World Championship on the road.
