Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt were nominated by UEFA on Thursday for the prize of best defender of the last Champions League season. Frenkie de Jong can be named best midfielder.
28-year-old Van Dijk impressed Liverpool by winning the Champions League. The Orange-international came into action in twelve of the thirteen games and scored twice.
His 20-year-old teammate Alexander-Arnold also impressed and stood out with a nice assist on striker Divock Origi in the bizarre semi-final match with FC Barcelona (4-0 win).
De Ligt had an important contribution to Ajax's successful Champions League season, which narrowly missed a final spot against Tottenham Hotspur. The nineteen-year-old defender, who recently moved to Juventus, was the youngest captain ever in the knockout phase.
The 22-year-old De Jong was also an important force at Ajax and forced a transfer to FC Barcelona. He competes with Christian Eriksen (Tottenham) and Jordan Henderson (Liverpool) for the prize of best midfielder.
More than a week ago it became known that Van Dijk, De Ligt and De Jong are among the ten nominees for the title FIFA Player of the Year.
