It was just over six weeks as tennis's highest ranked player on the women's side for Ashleigh Barty.

But during this week's WTA tournament in Toronto, Canada, it is clear that either Japanese Naomi Osaka or Karolina Pliskova, Czech Republic, will take over as the world's best female tennis player on the WTA's ranking list.

Both are on to the third round of the tournament.

However, the 23-year-old Australian crashed earlier this week against 29-year-old American Sofia Kenin.

- I wasn't there today. Sometimes I made big mistakes, which is not something I'm used to or comfortable with, she said after the loss.

Loss in Wimbledon

Barty took over as the world's best female tennis player at the end of June after winning both the Grand Slam French Championship and the WTA in Birmingham, UK - but then lost surprisingly in Wimbledon's fourth inning against 37-ranked American Alison Riske.

Ashleigh Barty, despite two heavy draws in a row, is confident she can get her game ready for the next grand slam tournament US Open, which starts at the end of August.

- It's not panic. It was my first match on hardcourt in a very long time, she said.

Williams on

There she can face stiff competition from another former worldview: Serena Williams. The American lost the Wimbledon final in July, but in William's first match since then, she comfortably beat Elise Mertens, Belgium, and advanced to the third round in Toronto.

- It feels good. It's definitely different since I haven't played a lot of hardcourt this year, but it's nice to be back, ”she said.

Serena Williams got spoiled early this year for injuries, but is now back and aiming for the US Open for her 24th grand slam title.
