Mathieu van der Poel has booked his second world cup win of the mountain bike season on Sunday. The Limburger was the first to cross the line in Val di Sole, Italy.
In the final phase of an exciting race, Van der Poel stayed ahead of Swiss Mathias Flückiger for eighteen seconds. Flückigers countryman Nino Schurter finished third.
The 24-year-old Van der Poel already became European mountain bike champion last week. He recorded his first world cup victory in the Slovakian town of Nové Mesto at the end of May.
On Friday Van der Poel was already the best in the short track race in Val di Sole. There, too, he finally crossed the finish line solo.
Van der Poel aims to take gold as a mountain biker at the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year. He will let the World Championship pass him by later this year, because he is competing in the World Cycling Championships on the road.
