Borussia Dortmund won the German supercup on Saturday at the expense of Bayern Munich. The team of coach Lucien Favre was 2-0 too strong for the national champion in their own Signal Iduna Stadium.
It is the first time since 2014 and for the seventh time in total that Dortmund seizes the so-called DFL Supercup. 'BVB' finished second in the Bundesliga last season, while Bayern took the double.
The game between Dortmund and Bayern was scoreless halfway through, after which Paco Alcácer broke the spell in the third minute of the second half. The Spanish striker beat Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer with a low shot from the edge of the penalty area (1-0).
The lead by Dortmund led Bayern to play more attacking, but that created room for the home club to strike with a counter and that was successful twenty minutes before the end. The fast English attacker Jadon Sancho was sent towards the Bayern goal and he remained face to face with Neuer cool (2-0).
Bundesliga season starts in two weeks
The victory over Bayern is a boost for Dortmund, which plays against Preussen Münster in the first round of the DFB-Pokal on Friday. That club plays in the Third Bundesliga. Dortmund's first league match is at home against Augsburg FC on Saturday 17 August.
For Bayern it is the first time since 2015 that the season does not start with the win of the German supercup. The team of trainer Niko Kovac plays next weekend in the cup against the amateurs of Energie Cottbus and on Friday, August 16, Hertha BSC is the first opponent in the Bundesliga.
