Max Verstappen was positive on Friday after the partly rained-out training sessions in Hungary. The Red Bull Racing driver expects to be able to compete with Mercedes at the Hungaroring for the rest of the weekend.

On Friday morning, Verstappen still complained about sensitivity to wind at the rear of the car, but that problem played little or no role in the second training session.

"After the first training I was not so happy. But it is important to test certain things on the car," said Verstappen. "Some things worked, others didn't."

"We learned a few things about the balance in the car. In the second training it looked good. It was a good day for us."

Due to rain, relationships are still unclear

Due to the rain on the Hungaroring, Verstappen only finished twelve rounds in the second training session. With 1.17,909 he set the second time behind teammate Pierre Gasly.

Because all drivers did not spend much time on the track in wet conditions, it remains to be seen how strong Red Bull really is in Hungary. "I think we're a little behind Mercedes," said Verstappen based on his twelve rounds. "But at least we seem competitive, that's positive."

On Friday morning, Verstappen also scored the second time in the first training session with 1.17.398. At the time, 21-year-old Limburger only narrowly left Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton (1.17.233).

Red Bull tries to find a problem at the start

In the last part of the second training there were hardly any cars on the track due to the rain. Verstappen did some starting simulations, to investigate whether the problem he had at the start of the races in Austria and Germany has since been resolved.

During the simulations in Hungary, the Limburger quickly moved from his place, but he could not say whether the problem had actually been resolved. "We are trying to find out what went wrong, the test looked good anyway."

Gasly: 'We haven't seen real Ferrari speed'

For Gasly it was only the second time this year that he was at the top of the timetable at the end of the training. He previously set the fastest time at Silverstone in the first practice for the Grand Prix of Great Britain.

"Due to the weather it is difficult to say anything meaningful about this training, but with us it went well both on dry and in the rain," said the Frenchman.

"But I don't know what to expect for the rest of the weekend. I don't want to anticipate that too much, because we haven't yet seen the real speed of Ferrari," Gasly realized.

Charles Leclerc did not get any further than seventh in the second practice session, while his Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel only recorded the thirteenth fastest time on the wet circuit.

The last training session for the Grand Prix of Hungary will start on Saturday at 12.00, followed by the qualification at 15.00. The race starts on Sunday at 3.10 pm.
