Bronze Malyutina on the background of demarche

The medal program of the 12th day of the World Aquatics Championships began with the men's final in the 200m freestyle swimming. Among the participants of the swim was Russian Martin Malyutin, who had to start on the first track because of not the highest result in the semifinal. However, the 20-year-old athlete was still among the favorites thanks to the third time in the preliminary round.

At first, Malyutin looked modestly at a distance, but he had a powerful finish left. The winner of the semifinal, Australian Clyde Lewis, started at the world record level, but lost the lead already after the first hundred meters. He was caught up by Chinese Sun Yang, from whose back Lithuanian Danas Rapshis jumped out at the finish line. Malyutin also accelerated at the end of the race, but took only fourth place.

The athlete from the Baltics touched the side before everyone else and became the first swimmer - the world champion from his country among men. But there was no joy after the end of the race on his face. Next to his name on the scoreboard immediately appeared an inscription reporting disqualification. The result of the Rapšis was annulled due to a false start, which was noticed by the judges after the video replay.

As a result, Sun Yang, who defended his title, was declared the world champion. The second place was taken by the Japanese Katsuhiro Matsumoto, and Malyutin, along with Briton Duncan Scott, was promoted to the status of bronze medalist. Two years ago, the Russian athlete Alexander Krasnykh was also the third in this distance. The Malutin Medal was the third for the Russian national team in this short-distance swimming tournament.

Sun Yang's victory did not go without another scandal. This time, instead of Mac Horton, Scott arranged a demarche at the awards ceremony. He also refused to shake hands with the Chinese, to stand with him on the same level of the podium and together to be photographed, expressing dissatisfaction with the doping past of Sun Yang. The world champion in response shouted at the British before giving the medal and actively gesticulated at him. Malyutin shook Sun Yang’s hand, but also made it clear that he did not support his doping incidents.

“I don’t really believe in Sun Yun’s honesty, he was already caught dope. Let's see how he will pass the court. In general, we have a normal sporting relationship, all shaking hands with each other. I'm fine with all this. Of course, there will be no demarche, ”Malyutin told RIA Novosti before the award ceremony.

Rylov medal workout

The next final, in which the Russian swimmers claimed the medals, was a one-foot mark on the back of men. On the eve, Yevgeny Rylov showed the second time in the semifinals, slightly losing to the Chinese Xu Jiayu, who broke the competition record. Both athletes were very close to the world record, and each had approximately equal chances to win.

Rylov started the final swim cautiously, as befits a specialist over a longer distance. But he again succeeded a powerful spurt at the finish, as it was in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay. For a while, Rylov walked alongside Xu Jiayu, but still lost him 0.24 seconds and for the second time became the silver medalist at the World Championships in Gwangju.

In this discipline, Russian swimmers did not win medals for a long time - the last time Arkady Vyatchanin ranked second in 2003. However, Rylov Silver was not satisfied, and he refused to comment on the result of the race. In swimming for 200 meters, the Russian will probably not miss the gold.

A few minutes before the men's start, the girls also played medals on a hundred meter on the back. This finale did not go without a Russian representative office - 16-year-old Daria Vaskina entered the first track. Russian woman failed to rise above last place, but for the second time in the World Cup she managed to swim out of one minute, which for a junior is a good start for the future. The victory was won by the Canadian Kylie Mass, who was the first in the last 44 years to defend the title of world champion in this kind of program.

Silver finish Efimova

The main event of the evening was the duel between Russian woman Yulia Efimova and American Lilly King in swimming at 100 meters breaststroke. On the eve of the girls very clearly outlined their intentions in the preliminary heats and semi-finals. First, the first was King, but then Efimova showed the best result of the day - 1.05.56. One of two world champions was supposed to win her second gold at this distance.

In the final, Efimova showed the worst reaction among all the girls and did not fully work out the underwater part of the swim. Although she immediately caught up with all rivals, King remained ahead. At half the distance, the Russian woman lost 0.41 seconds, which was almost impossible to play. At 75 meters, however, she succeeded. But the Russians didn’t have enough strength to finish, and King, aiming to swim out of a minute and five seconds, got her way, and Efimova sailed the second.

The Russian swimmer won the 15th medal of the world championships in her career, and the silver award was her seventh in the collection. Thus, she repeated the achievement of the American Nathalie Coglin, who as many times was on the verge of gold.

Ledeka disease

For the American Katie Ledeka, the World Championship in Gwangju turned into the most unsuccessful career tournament. She has already suffered a defeat at a distance of 400 meters, having failed to win the fourth consecutive gold. There was no struggle for medals and in the longest swim at 1500 meters.

Although on the eve of Ledeka won the preliminary round, having overtaken Italian Simone Quadarell by three seconds, she had to withdraw from the competition due to poor health. In the finals, instead of her came Spaniard Mirea Belmonte, which the American had previously left more than once with silver.

20-year-old Kvadarella fully took the opportunity for the first time to become a world champion. She increased her lead after every hundred meters and won with a new Italian record - 15.40,89. The second came to the finish German Sarah Köhler, who won the Gwangju baton in open water swimming. The bronze medal went to the 17-year-old Chinese woman Wang Jianjiah.

Anniversary Chance for Pellegrini

Women's preliminary heats at 200 meters crawl missed three favorites at once. At the last moment, the same Katie Ledeka, Australian Emma McKeon and Taylor Ruck from Canada refused to participate. The first two were prevented by the disease, and Cancer decided to unload its competitive schedule. In their absence, the semifinals came out even for those who did not swim out of 1.59 - at the world championships this happened for the first time since 2007.

Two Russian women - Veronika Andrusenko, who took fourth place in this discipline two years ago, and world championship debutant Valeria Salamatina were among the semi-finalists. But in their evening swims, they became the sixth and were left without a final. The best result was shown by Italian Federica Pellegrini, who has every chance to win 10 years after her first success at the World Championships and 15 years after silver at the Athens Olympics.

Also in this session the participants of the finals in swimming on 50 meters breaststroke among men were determined. Kirill Prigoda took the third place in the first semi-final, but this was not enough to go straight ahead. He shared eighth place with Dane Tobias Bjerg and had to swim the distance again. From the second attempt, Prigoda still went further. Another Russian, Andrey Nikolaev, failed to follow his compatriot, he eventually shared the 11th place.

No new duel

There will not be another scandalous swim involving Chinese Sun Yang and Australian Mac Horton at this world championship. In the morning, both participated in the qualifying starts for the 800-meter freestyle, which were determined by eight participants scheduled for Wednesday's finals.

Sun Yang competed with the Olympic champion in the 1500-meter swimming Gregorio Paltrinieri in the last but one swim. Both were in the lead throughout the race, but at the last one hundred meters the Chinese slowed down the pace, and he was overtaken by Frenchman David Aubrey and another Italian representative, bronze medalist at the 400m world championship, Gabriele Detti. Sun Yang lost all of them for almost two seconds and was on the verge of missing the final.

Horton had a great opportunity to get even with his most principled rival, knocking him out of the further struggle for medals. However, he swam the distance four seconds slower. As a result, Sun Yang showed the eighth result and will be able to compete for the 12th world title.

Of the Russian swimmers, only Ilya Druzhinin spoke at a distance of 800 meters. The 21-year-old athlete performed in the second highest heat and took the 18th overall position. Sun Yun time he lost almost six seconds.
