Ajax has almost finished Edson Álvarez. According to De Telegraaf and the AD, the team from Amsterdam reached an oral agreement with Club América on the transfer of the 21-year-old Mexican defender.
The 1.87 meter long Álvarez, which is a fixed value in the Mexican team, costs around 15 million euros and will travel to Amsterdam in the short term to sign a contract until the summer of 2024 in the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
Player affairs director Marc Overmars of Ajax confirmed his interest in Álvarez earlier on Monday, but does not see him as the successor of Matthijs de Ligt, who is about to leave for Juventus.
"It is not one-on-one related to Matthijs's departure. Edson is a player who is doing well with us. I think he is a good age, 21 years old, a regular international of Mexico and we already know him longer because we have been following him for a while. He has undergone a good development and can handle multiple positions, "he told the AD and others .
"Edson started as a right back, played as a central defender and in recent times as a controlling midfielder with Mexico. I think that had to do with the central defender Reyes, the star of the last years of that team. What place he has with us will take, we'll see for himself, maybe he needs some time too. "

Álvarez in interest from many clubs
Álvarez has been playing for Club América all his life. He went through youth training there and so far has played 107 official matches (five goals) in the first team of the Mexican top club.
The 28-time international recently won the Gold Cup with Mexico. He played at that tournament as a controlling midfielder, including in the final against the United States (1-0 win).
Álvarez had no reason to complain about interest. He was also reportedly interested in by AS Roma, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Zenit Saint Petersburg.
Ajax is quite active on the transfer market this summer. The reigning champion and cup winner previously won Razvan Marin (Standard Liège), Lisandro Martínez (Defensa y Justicia), Kik Pierie (SC Heerenveen), Kjell Scherpen (FC Emmen), Quincy Promes (Seville) and extended the lease contract with Benfica keeper Bruno Varela.
Ajax is currently in training camp in Austria. The team of trainer Erik ten Hag is playing a friendly match against Watford on Thursday. The first official game of the season is on July 27 against PSV in the battle for the Johan Cruijff Scale.
