The eighth stage of the Tour de France, 200 km long and linking Mâcon to Saint-Étienne, was won on Saturday 13 July by the Belgian Thomas De Gendt, finishing the stage alone with 15 seconds ahead of his pursuers .

Behind him, France's Thibaut Pinot and Julian Alaphilippe launched an attack in the final climb of the race. With his 5 seconds of bonus and his arrival with 20 seconds ahead of the pack, Julian Alaphilippe managed to take the yellow jersey to the Italian Julio Ciccone who seized it during the seventh stage.

Among the favorites, Pinot recovers a few seconds ahead of his competitors in the overall standings, like Nibali or Geraint Thomas who fell.
