The British Lizzy Banks won the eighth stage of the Giro Rosa on Friday. The Bigla driver came solo in Maniago. Annemiek van Vleuten remains in the lead of the rankings.
Banks was part of a group of ten riders, who managed to stay out of the pack of the peloton. The British attacked more than 10 kilometers from the finish line and managed to hold on to the finish line.
There were no women in the leading group who threatened the pink jersey of Van Vleuten. The Dutch himself also fell on one of the climbs, but was again caught by the crowd. She then kept quiet.
It is only the third time this Giro that the stage victory is not achieved by a Dutch driver. The opening team time trial was a prey for the German team Canyon SRAM, while the Italian Letizia Borghesi won the fourth stage. Marianne Vos was good for three wins, while Van Vleuten booked two stage victories.
In the remaining two stages Van Vleuten defends a lead of more than 4 minutes on fellow countryman Anna van der Breggen. The Polish Katarzyna Niewiadoma is the number three at 4.23.
The biggest test is on Saturday, as the drivers finish uphill in Montasio. The tenth stage is a flat ride to Udine.
