Atlético Madrid denies that it has sold Antoine Griezmann to FC Barcelona. The Catalan club reported Friday that the French striker comes for 120 million euros, but according to the Madrilenians none of that is true.

Barcelona states that with the 120 million euros it complies with the departure clause in the Griezmann contract, which is agreed on a contract until mid 2024 in Camp Nou.

In a statement, Atlético states that the departure clause is not 120 million, but 200 million.

The club reduced the amount in the clause this summer by 80 million to accommodate Griezmann. When it became clear that the striker reached personal agreement with Barcelona much earlier, Atlético decided to stick to the initial 200 million clause.

Most expensive footballers of all time

  • 1. Neymar - 222 million, from FC Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain
  • 2. Kylian Mbappé - 133 million, from AS Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain
  • 3. João Felix - 126 million, from Benfica to Atlético Madrid
  • 4. Philippe Coutinho - 120 million, from Liverpool to FC Barcelona

Transfer soap Griezmann has been around for months

The new developments fit in with the transfer soap, in which Barcelona and Atlético have already been involved for some time. Last week Atlético even seemed to cancel the 28-year-old Griezmann's transfer. In a statement, the club criticized the Barcelona method, which would have reached a personal agreement with the players in February, behind Atlético's back.

When the transfer ends, the 72-time French international coming season becomes teammate of Frenkie de Jong, who has been transferred by Ajax for around 75 million.

Brazilian defender Emerson (from Atlético Mineiro) and goalkeeper Neto (from Valencia) are also new to Barcelona this summer, while keeper Jasper Cillissen has left for Valencia.

Atletico paid 30 million euros for Griezmann

Should Griezmann make the switch to Barcelona for 120 million euros, he will be listed as the fourth most expensive player ever. Neymar, who moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain for 222 million euros in the summer of 2017, remains the most expensive player of all time.

In 2014, Atlético paid only 30 million euros for Griezmann, who was transferred from Real Sociedad. He scored 94 goals in 180 league matches for the Madrid club.

The year of his transfer to Atlético was also the year of the international debut of Griezmann, who became world champion with France in 2018. With four goals, one of which was won in the 4-2 final against Croatia. He had a substantial share in the overall victory.
