Friendly match between the teams of the Northern Regional League of Argentina ended in tragedy. 17-year-old goalkeeper of the club "Union de Golondrin" Ramon Ismael Coronel died of a heart attack after a defensive penalty.
“We confirm the death of the football player of Union de Golondrin, Ramon Ismael Coronel, known as Peaks. At this difficult time, our thoughts are with his family, ”the statement of the Northern Regional League said.
The tragedy occurred in the small town of San Manuel, located in the Argentine province of Santa Fe. The match, organized in honor of one of the regional holidays, ended in a draw, and the teams began to punch a 11-meter series. One of the opponent's blows fell on Coronel's chest. The ball missed the goal, and the goalkeeper ran to celebrate the reflected penalty to his teammates, but suddenly lost consciousness and fell to the ground.
“He was in seventh heaven because he was able to save his team, and then just fell on the grass,” said goalie cousin Andrea Coronel, told Reconquista Hoy.
To help the young man ran teammates and players of the opposing team, as well as the spectators who were in the stands. It was they who brought the athlete to the hospital of the city of Reconquista, located 50 kilometers from San Manuel. The victim had to be transported in the back of a truck, because for unknown reasons there was no medical team near the stadium. This information was confirmed at once by several witnesses, as well as his father Eduardo Coronel.
“I can only say one thing: I don’t understand why there was no ambulance nearby during such a meeting,” said Coronel, the senior.
The mother of the football player Mercedes Hara de Colonel, who is also the president of the Union de Golondrin team, attended the match, but her attempts to call for help were also futile.
“We give up when we think that there was no ambulance at such a big event. In desperation, I called the doctor, but no one helped us. My son lay on the ground for 15-20 minutes. If there was a car with oxygen nearby, he would now be alive, ”the woman said.
Attempts to bring the goalkeeper to the senses were not crowned with success, and he died before he arrived at the hospital. Doctors came to the conclusion that the cause of the incident was cardiac arrest due to a strong ball hit in the chest.
Currently, local law enforcement agencies, together with representatives of the Northern Regional League, are investigating the death of Coronel. The incident qualifies as an accident, and therefore there was no need for a forensic medical examination.
According to the mother of a young man, her son was born to become a footballer.
“He was born with a ball and died playing football. I ask myself why this is so, but I do not find an answer to it. It happened at that moment when he did what he loved most, ”Coronel added.
In addition, she urged the clubs to provide the stadiums with ambulances and a duty doctor for all matches, regardless of their level. At the same time, leaders of amateur teams often complain about the lack of funding to ensure this requirement.
His condolences in connection with the death of the local team goalkeeper expressed his teammates, as well as representatives of the commune of Golondrin.
In mid-June, the 17-year-old Russian biathlete Artemy Khasankayev died from cardiac arrest during training camps in the Crimea. According to the preliminary version, together with his sports group, he went for a run in the mountains, decided to return to the base alone and disappeared. The next day, his body was found without signs of life.
