One of the photos of the year was thus signed in newspapers around the world. From 'The New York Times' to 'The Guardian' going through 'Bild', 'Times of India', 'The Asahi Shimbun' or EL MUNDO. Surely they have seen it: more than 200 people lined up on Tuesday to reach the summit of Everest. The roof of the world, an uninhabitable place, was crowded as the area of boxes of a hypermarket. The image was in itself a denunciation of many things: of human ambition, of the overexploitation of the Earth, of vanity, even of waste - we must not forget that an expedition can cost 100,000 euros per person -. From it could be born multiple issues: the need for a regulation of the mountain by China and Nepal , the risks that are run by being exposed for hours to lack of oxygen in a mountain where on Saturday two more climbers were killed, the end of romanticism in the conquest of the heavens ... But let's go back to the beginning.

Who is Nirmal Purja? He is not a climber victim of the traffic jam or any of his many local helpers; is the maximum exponent of mountaineering that reveals his own photography. Bottled oxygen, fixed ropes, ladders and, if necessary, even helicopters to go from top to top. The advances that fans used to cram Everest this week are exactly the same that Purja is using to make history. Its challenge: to ascend the 14 mountains of more than 8,000 meters in just seven months and thus destroy the current record that is in more than seven years. Between April 23 and last Friday, summit in Annapurna, Dhaulagari, Kanchenjunga, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu, in June and August will try to tread K2, Nanga Parbat, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum 1 and Gasherbrum 2 and between September and October will end his project with Manaslu, Shishapangma and Cho Oyu.

Few create so much controversy in the world of mountaineering. On the one hand, their career advancements banalise the mountain and detract from the beauty of the process; On the other, he has never forgotten the essence of his sport. Despite the large team that accompanies him, despite the tightness of his calendar, in the middle of his project he has already tried to save three lives and that raises him. In April, when he was descending from Annapurna , he was informed that the Malay Wui Kin Chin was trapped at 7,500 meters, commanded a rescue and took him to the hospital in Kathmandu where he would eventually die. And this month, in the Kangchenjunga, he encountered the Biplab Baidya and Kuntal Karar Indians at 8,200 meters, gave them their bottled oxygen and helped them in a desperate descent until they both could not take it anymore. And it is that as much as it has turned the mountain into competition ...

He will always be a Nirmal Purja soldier. Born in 1984 in Myagdi and raised in Chitwan, both districts of Nepal, he entered the Gurkhas Brigade in 2003, an elite corps of the British Army made up of Nepalis, and in 2009 he joined the Special Boat Service, special forces of the British Royal Navy. He served there until in 2012, six years after obtaining a life pension, he traveled at the foot of Everest and decided to leave everything to start running in mountains like that. In 2017 he broke his first records, chained Everest and Lhotse in 10 hours and Everest, Lhotse and Makalu in five days, and thus started the exaggerated project in which he is now immersed. With the help of sponsors and the sale of his house, he accumulated enough money to attack the 14 eight thousand and try to appear in newspapers around the world. He has done it by doing one of the photos of the year. Now his name is no longer forgotten.
