FIFA, which planned to increase the format of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar from 32 to 48 teams by playing matches in at least one neighboring country, announced on Wednesday that it was abandoning its plans.

Fifa, which had submitted a feasibility study in May, had moved 32 to 48 teams from 2022 on the agenda of its next Congress in June in Paris, but said that " in the current circumstances, a such a proposal could not be implemented ".
