The Eredivisie match between PEC Zwolle and FC Groningen was canceled on Wednesday-evening during the second half at a 1-2 score due to thunderstorms. The game will be played on Monday.

The thunderstorm came too close in Zwolle, where referee Martin van den Kerkhof decided in the pouring rain - with more than half an hour left - to send the players inside.

After consideration it was decided not to continue playing. "We have gathered a lot of meteorological information and consulted with the trainers and presidents of both clubs. Unfortunately we had to decide to strike definitively," says Van den Kerkhof at FOX Sports .

The score was 1-2 at the time of the strike. Groningen had taken the lead in the first half through Kaj Sierhuis and in the second half Lennart equalized Thy. Just before the game was stopped, Paul Gladon had arranged for the second Groningen goal.

Played out on Monday at 8 p.m.

The last 35 minutes of PEC-Groningen will be played on Monday from 8 pm in the MACĀ³PARK Stadium in Zwolle.

There is room for that, because the 33rd Eredivisie game round - which was initially scheduled for next weekend - was recently moved to 15 May due to the busy (European) program of Ajax.

Coach Danny Buijs' FC Groningen competes in the final phase of the season to participate in European football. PEC Zwolle, where trainer Jaap Stam relocates to Feyenoord after this season, is almost certainly safe in the fight against relegation.
