Leclerc understands that Vettel precedes Ferrari in 'fifty-fifty situations'

Charles Leclerc understands that Sebastian Vettel is preferred at Ferrari when situations arise where the team management has to lead a driver.

The new Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto recently said that "Vettel is given priority in certain situations". An understandable decision, says Leclerc, who will make his debut in 2019 for the illustrious Italian team.

"I get it," he said Thursday at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, Australia. "In situations where it is fifty-fifty, a choice must be made. Then it is useful if there is a number one and a number two. It is up to me to make sure that this is reversed."

"That won't be easy," admitted the 21-year-old Monegask. "I still have a lot to learn."

Drivers are free to race with each other

However, the question of exactly what fifty-fifty situations Ferrari envisages in which the foretelling of Vettel can play a role remained unanswered.

"The drivers are just free to race against each other," Binotto said earlier. "We won't ask Charles to be slower, or Sebastian faster. I want them both at their maximum."

"But if a certain situation comes along at the start of the season, Sebastian is the man with the experience. He has been with us for many years, has won titles. So he is our champion," said the Italian Swiss.

"Meaningless to go into examples"

Vettel itself also sees no need to further explain Ferrari's considerations. "I don't think it makes sense to go through that. It's clear and I think Mattia was also clear: We are free to race against each other," the German emphasized.

"Ultimately we both do our best and race together for Ferrari. We want to bring our team back to the top. That is ultimately our main goal. It will be a long season and I think it is useless to talk about certain situations right now. "

Leclerc: "I also don't know what the situation is with those fiftyfifty situations, I have to admit. When the time comes, they will let me know when I'm in the car."

The first free training in Melbourne is scheduled for Friday at 2.00 am Dutch time. The qualification is Saturday at 7 a.m. The season really starts on Sunday at 6:10 am, when the race starts.
