Paris Saint-Germain was eliminated by Manchester United in the round of 16 of the European Cup of Football Clubs (Champions League), March 6, 2019. The Parisians lost 3-1 at home against Manchester United , although they had won 2-0 in the first leg.

Paris Saint-Germain will continue to dream of the quarter-finals of the European Cup of Football Clubs (Champions League). Because he is not ready to play them ... PSG has indeed been eliminated once again in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Two years after their staggering elimination against FC Barcelona (victory 4-0 in the first leg, defeat 1-6 in the return), the champions of France have almost made worse against Manchester United, this March 6, 2019, at the same stage of the competition.

Winners 2-0 in England , the Parisians have achieved an improbable underperformance: losing 3-1 at home against the Mancunians yet decimated by injuries and private including midfielder Paul Pogba (suspended).

Warning signs

The first two goals were warning signs of the coming disaster. The first was scored in the second minute on a pass behind defender Thilo Kehrer. The Belgian Romelu Lukaku took the opportunity to intercept the ball, to face the goalkeeper PSG and open the score: 0-1, 2nd.

Gianluigi Buffon, despite being considered the best goalkeeper of the last twenty years, then released the ball on a shot by Marcus Rashford. Lukaku, who followed, doubled the bet (1-2, 30th) to the dismay of the Italian goalkeeper.

Defender Juan Bernat had yet equalized for PSG (1-1, 12th) on a center of striker Kylian Mbappé. But the latter and his partners multiplied the failures, especially in the second period.

A decisive penalty

It is not for lack of trying, the winger Angel Di Maria seeing such a goal invalidated for offside (56th) and Bernat pulling on the right amount (84th). But the Parisians have mostly seemed to hesitate between attacking to score and ensure qualification, and defend their thin accounting lead over all of the two matches.

It was then that referee Damir Skomina gave a penalty to Manchester United, after using video assistance, for a hand of defender Presnel Kipembe in his penalty area. Marcus Rashford has sentenced (1-3, 90 + 4) sending the PSG to its sad reality: that of a team that has not yet reached the semi-finals of the Champions League despite 1, 5 billion euros spent by its owner, Qatar, since 2011 ...
