Miyagi Prefecture will announce the inundation assumption on the 10th of this month in the event of a tsunami of the largest class.

It means that even urban areas that have exceeded the scale of the Great East Japan Earthquake and have been raised after the earthquake may enter the flooded area.

Based on the Great East Japan Earthquake, the national government has set the inundation range assuming the largest class of tsunami, and obliges each prefecture to proceed with disaster prevention measures based on it.

Miyagi Prefecture has set up a study group to proceed with discussions, and as a result, decided to announce a new inundation assumption on the 10th of this month.

Under the new assumption, we simulated tsunamis for the three giant earthquakes that occur off the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region, the Japan Trench, and the Chishima Trench, which are the same as the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The result of the largest inundation is selected for each region and a hypothetical map is created.

We also considered the possibility of overlapping bad conditions, such as the seawall breaking and occurring during high tide.

For this reason, this assumption is that the scale of the Great East Japan Earthquake will be exceeded, and there is a possibility that urban areas that have been raised after the earthquake will also enter the flooded area.

On the 10th of this month, the prefecture will publish a new assumption on its website to call for preparations for the tsunami and encourage coastal cities and towns to review evacuation shelters and evacuation routes.

38 of the 40 prefectures nationwide that are at risk of inundation have already announced inundation estimates for the new tsunami after the earthquake.
