The Japan Meteorological Agency announced the activity status of active volcanoes nationwide in June and points to watch out for.

"Crater area warning" has been announced for seven volcanoes nationwide, and "eruption warning (peripheral sea area)" has been announced for one submarine volcano, saying that eruptions are occurring and volcanic activity is increasing.

7 volcanoes around the crater

The "crater area warning" has been announced because the eruption may affect the area around the crater and the area where you live.

▽ "Mt. Asama" on the prefectural border between Nagano and Gunma prefectures

▽ "Sakurajima" in Kagoshima prefecture "

▽" Iwo Jima Satsuma "

▽" Kuchinoerabujima "

▽" Suwanosejima "

and of ▽ Ogasawara Islands" Nishinoshima "of" Iwo Jima ", is a total of 7 volcano.

Volcanic Alert Level 3 is 2 volcanoes

Of these, eruption alert level 3, which indicates "mountain entry restrictions" that may affect the vicinity of the place of residence, has been announced in "Sakurajima" and "Suwanosejima".

[Sakurajima] At

the summit crater of Mt. Minamidake in Sakurajima, an eruption occurred once every 29 days, and a very small eruption occurred occasionally, but there was no explosive eruption and the eruptive activity has been declining.

On the other hand, the eruptive activity will be activated again because the magma supplied for a long period of time has been accumulated under the Aira Caldera in Kagoshima Bay and the amount of volcanic gas released has been generally large. There is a possibility.

The Japan Meteorological Agency calls for caution against large volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows within a range of approximately 2 km from the Minamidake summit crater and Showa crater.

[Suwanosejima]

Active eruptive activity continues at the Mitake crater on Suwanosejima.

From the 21st to the 23rd, large volcanic bombs were observed several times near the center of the crater.

For this reason, we announced a crater area warning on the 23rd and raised the eruption alert level from 2 (crater area regulation) to 3 (mountain entry regulation).

The Japan Meteorological Agency is calling for caution against large volcanic bombs associated with the eruption, approximately 2 kilometers from the Mitake crater.

Volcanic Alert Level 2 is 4 volcanoes

Eruption alert level 2 that restricts access to the crater area has been announced at four volcanoes, "Mt. Asama," "Mt. Aso," "Satsuma Ioshima," and "Kuchinoerabu Island."

[Kuchinoerabu Island] On

Kuchinoerabu Island, many volcanic earthquakes have passed, but since May, there has been a declining trend, and no large-scale volcanic earthquakes have been observed. ..

For this reason, we announced a crater area warning on July 5, and lowered the eruption alert level from 3 (mountain entry restrictions) to 2 (crater area restrictions).

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns against large volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows within a range of approximately 1 km from the Shindake crater, and warns of pyroclastic flows within a range of approximately 2 km to the west of the crater.

[Mt. Asama] At

Mt. Asama, although seismic activity and the amount of volcanic gas released tend to decrease, it is thought that the state before the increase in volcanic activity did not return to the state before the beginning of March.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for caution against large volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows within a range of approximately 2 km from the crater, saying that small-scale eruptions that could affect the mountaintop crater within approximately 2 km may continue to occur.

[Mt. Aso] At

Mt. Aso, the amplitude of volcanic tremors remained small, and there was no change in other observational data.

For this reason, we announced the eruption forecast on the 9th and lowered the eruption alert level from 2 (regulation around the crater) to 1 (note that it is an active volcano).

On the other hand, on the 18th, the amplitude of volcanic tremors temporarily became slightly large, and the number of volcanic earthquakes presumed to be the epicenter near the Nakadake crater increased temporarily.

Since Mt. Aso is an active volcano, the Japan Meteorological Agency is calling for continued attention to volcanic gas near the crater, as sediment and volcanic ash may erupt inside the crater.

[Satsuma Iojima] On

Satsuma Iojima, there is no particular change in the occurrence of volcanic earthquakes and tremors, but the amount of volcanic gas released continues to be around 1000 tons per day, and at night it is "fire." The thermal activity has continued to increase for a long time, such as the observation of the "earthquake phenomenon".

The Japan Meteorological Agency is calling for caution against large volcanic bombs within a range of approximately 500 meters from the crater.

2 volcanoes with no level warning

Although the eruption alert level has not been introduced, the "crater area warning" has been announced for "Nishinoshima" and "Iwojima" in the Ogasawara Islands.

[Nishinoshima]

No eruptions have been observed on Nishinoshima since late August 2020.

Although volcanic activity is declining, there are fumaroles and high temperature areas inside the summit crater, and it is possible that eruptions will resume in the future.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has continued to warn around the crater, which indicates "danger of entering the mountain," and is calling for caution against large volcanic bombs and lava flows within a range of approximately 1.5 km from the summit crater.

[Iwo Jima]

On Iwo Jima, which is estimated to have had a submarine eruption in September 2018, crustal movements indicating uplift of the entire island have been observed over the long term, and volcanic activity has remained somewhat active. ..

In addition, the ground temperature is high as a whole on the island, and there are many fumaroles, etc., and small-scale eruptions have occurred in the past.

The Japan Meteorological Agency may cause an eruption that affects the area around the crater, and is calling for caution in the surrounding waters.

"Eruption warning (surrounding sea area)" in "Fukutoku Okanoba"

At "Fukutoku-Okanoba", a submarine volcano near the Ogasawara Islands, an "eruption warning (surrounding sea area)" has been announced as there is a risk of an eruption affecting the surrounding sea area.

Observations from the sky conducted by the Japan Coast Guard on the 8th confirmed discoloration of the surrounding sea surface, which is believed to be due to volcanic activity.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is expected to have a small submarine eruption and is calling for caution against eruptions in the surrounding waters.

Eruption risk awareness even at eruption alert level 1

No eruption warning has been announced among active volcanoes nationwide, and there are volcanoes with an eruption alert level of 1, but they are still active volcanoes that have repeatedly erupted in the past.

At Mt. Ontake on the prefectural border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, an eruption occurred at level 1 in 2014, killing 58 people and leaving 5 missing.

It is also necessary to recognize again that a sudden eruption can occur in the absence of any noticeable precursors.
