The tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake reached the United States on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, causing casualties.

In addition, a lot of debris was washed ashore from Japan on the coasts of the United States and Canada.

In June 2012, more than a year after the earthquake, a 20-meter-long concrete floating pier at Misawa Fishing Port in Aomori Prefecture was washed ashore on the coast of Newport, Oregon, in the western United States.

The floating pier has been demolished, but some are on display in the city as monuments.

"I remember some of the people who saw the floating pier were crying," said Chris Havel of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, who was involved in work such as investigating the floating pier at the time. I thought that many people had died after hitting Japan, "he recalled.

According to Mr. Harbel, Oregon has been preparing for earthquakes and tsunamis, albeit gradually, since the floating pier was washed ashore.

"The bond between Japan and the United States exists across the Pacific Ocean. Ten years is just a date. Rather, what we have done and what we should do in the future, each country prepares for the future. I think it's important to see how we should fulfill our responsibilities. "
