The library in Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, which observed a seismic intensity of 6 upper, has been open two days after the earthquake, taking advantage of the experience of the Great East Japan Earthquake 10 years ago to minimize damage.

The Soma City Library has been open as usual since the 15th, two days after the earthquake that occurred on the 13th of this month.

At this library, we have taken disaster prevention measures based on the experience that it took a long time to recover due to the collapse of the bookshelf in the Great East Japan Earthquake 10 years ago.

According to the library, large bookshelves were supported by sticks to prevent them from falling over, and small bookshelves were fixed to the floor with metal fittings.

In addition, a non-slip sheet was placed on the top of the bookshelf to prevent the books from falling from high places.

With these measures, we were able to minimize the damage caused by this earthquake, and we were able to open the museum as usual two days after the earthquake.

A woman who used the library said, "I thought it was closed due to the earthquake, but I was surprised because I was doing it. I wonder why the books are lined up on the bookshelf. I'm glad I wanted to borrow the books as well." I did.

Michi Ushiyasuzawa, assistant director of the Soma City Library, said, "When the Great East Japan Earthquake struck 10 years ago, the bookshelves collapsed and more books fell than this time. Thanks to the measures taken, the museum is closed for one day. So I think it gave me some experience. "
