Four and a half years after the Kumamoto earthquake, nearly 900 people are still in temporary housing, etc. October 14, 5:07

It has been four and a half years since the occurrence of a series of Kumamoto earthquakes that killed 276 people, including related deaths.

According to Kumamoto Prefecture, while more than 90% of the victims have rebuilt their homes, nearly 900 people still live in temporary housing, and rebuilding their homes continues to be an issue.

In a series of Kumamoto earthquakes that shook with a seismic intensity of 7 on April 14 and 16, 2016, 276 people were killed, including related deaths.

According to Kumamoto Prefecture, the number of victims who were affected by a series of earthquakes and continued to evacuate through "deemed temporary housing" utilizing temporary housing and private rental housing was 821 households and 892 people at the end of last month, which is the highest period. It has been reduced to less than 1/10.

Of these, 425 people from 156 households, which account for nearly half of the total, were affected by the disaster in Mashiki Town, which was particularly damaged, and some people have been delayed in rebuilding their homes due to the ongoing land readjustment projects.

The national and prefectural governments have decided to extend the period of stay for temporary housing, which was set to a maximum of 5 years, by another year for disaster victims who are delayed in rebuilding their homes due to the effects of such public works projects. The number of victims is expected to be about 130 households.

Kumamoto Prefecture says, "Four and a half years after the earthquake, there are still victims who continue to live in temporary housing and deemed temporary housing, so I would like to support the last one."
