Overview of volcanoes nationwide Nine volcanoes have "crater warnings" JMA Feb. 10 at 19:42

The Japan Meteorological Agency announced on October 10 the activity status of active volcanoes nationwide from January to February and points to watch out for. Nine volcanoes throughout the country have issued "Around the crater warning" and one submarine volcano has an "Eruption warning (peripheral sea area)" for eruptions and increasing volcanic activity.

9 volcano warnings around the crater

The crater warning has been announced as a possible eruption that could affect the vicinity of the crater and the neighborhood.
草 “Shirane Mountain” of Kusatsu Shirane Mountain in Gunma Prefecture,
▽ Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture,
「Shinmoedake, located on the Kirishima Mountains at the prefectural border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki,
「Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture,
▽ “Kuchierabujima”,
▽ "Satsuma Iwo Jima",
▽ "Suwanosejima",
「Nishinoshima in the Ogasawara Islands,
▽ "Iwojima",
There are 9 volcanoes in total.

Eruption caution level 3 is 2 volcanoes

Among them, there is a possibility that the impact may occur near the place of residence, and eruption caution level 3, which indicates "Iriyama restriction", has been published in "Sakurajima" and "Kuchierabujima".

<Kuchierabujima>
On January 11, an eruption occurred on Kuchierabujima since January last year.

Later, on the eruption of February 3, a large cinder reached approximately 600 meters from the crater, and pyroclastic flows ran down to a maximum of 1.5 km. In this eruption, plumes reached a height of 7000 meters as observed by satellite.

Volcanic activity is increasing on Kuchierabu Island, with volcanic earthquakes temporarily increasing and volcanic gas emissions continuing.

The Japan Meteorological Agency calls on eruption alert level 3 to be cautious of large cinders and pyroclastic flows within a range of approximately 2 km from the crater, and of pyroclastic flows from the crater to the shore of Mt. I am.

<Sakurajima>
Eruptions continue to occur at Minamidake summit crater in Sakurajima. In January, 104 eruptions were observed, of which 65 were explosive eruptions, all of which increased compared to the previous month. The volcanic plume reached a maximum of 2500 meters from the crater and entered the clouds, and a large volcanic block reached the fourth station, 1300 to 1700 meters from the crater.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for caution against large volcanic blocks and pyroclastic flows within a range of approximately 2 km from the Minamidake summit crater and Showa crater, as eruptions may continue to occur around the Minamidake summit crater.

Eruption caution level 2 is 5 volcanoes

Eruption caution level 2, where entry around the crater is regulated,
▽ “Shirane Mountain” of Kusatsu Shirane Mountain,
▽ Mt. Aso,
「" Shinmoedake "of the Kirishima Mountains,
▽ "Satsuma Iwo Jima",
▽ "Suwanosejima"
Of five volcanoes.

<Mt. Aso>
Eruptions continue at Mt. Aso at Nakadake No. 1 crater.

The amplitude of volcanic tremors evolves in a somewhat large state, and changes repeatedly, such as temporarily increasing.

There are many volcanic earthquakes, and the amount of volcanic gas released per day is as high as 1900 to 3700 tons, and the state of volcanic activity continues to increase.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is wary of large cinders and pyroclastic flows within 1 km from Nakadake No. 1 crater, and instructs local governments and others not to enter dangerous areas.

<Shinmoedake>
On January 2, volcanic earthquakes increased at Shinmoedake in the Kirishima Mountains, and the Japan Meteorological Agency raised the eruption alert level to 2.

The Japan Meteorological Agency calls for alerting large cinders approximately 2 km from the crater and pyroclastic flows approximately 1 km from the crater.

<Satsuma Iwo Jima>
No eruptions have been confirmed at Satsuma Iwo Jima since November 3, last year. At night, thermal activity has continued to increase over the long term, with high-volume volcanic gas and the like appearing in clouds and volcanic plumes, and occasionally a red fire is observed.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for vigilance against large cinders, approximately one kilometer from the crater.

<Shirane of Kusatsu-Shirane>
At "Shirane" in Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane, volcanic earthquakes have increased slightly in the shallow area near Yugama since early September last year, and tilt fluctuations indicating expansion at shallow places in Yugama have been observed.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for vigilance against large cinders, approximately one kilometer from the crater, as small phreatic eruptions may continue to occur.

<Suwanosejima>
Active eruption activity continues at the Mitake crater in Suwanose Island.

Eruptions occurred intermittently in early January, 13 of which were explosive. Volcanic plumes rose up to 1,400 meters from the crater, with large cinders reaching 600 meters from the crater.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned against large volcanic blocks within a range of about 1 km from the crater, as there is a risk of eruptions affecting the area around the crater.

Two volcano warnings at volcanoes without level introduction

Although no eruption alert level has been introduced, "Nishinoshima" and "Iwo Jima" in the Ogasawara Islands have been announced with "Around the crater warning".

<Nishinoshima>
Eruptions have been observed intermittently in Nishinoshima. Lava flows northeast from the central pyroclastic hill to the sea.

According to observations made by the Japan Coast Guard on the sky on January 17, cinder cones flew around the pyroclastic cone and no fall to the sea was observed.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that eruptions may continue in the future, and has continued to warn around the crater indicating “danger of entering the mountain,” calling for caution over large volcanic blocks and lava flows within a range of approximately 2.5 km from the summit crater.

<Iwojima>
At Iojima, where a submarine eruption was presumed to have occurred in September, volcanic activity has been somewhat active, with ground uplift occurring on the island as well as a rise in ground temperature throughout the island.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that eruptions that could affect the area around the crater may occur.

"Fukutokuoka noba" "Eruption warning (surrounding sea area)"

At the submarine volcano "Fukutokuoka Noba" near the Ogasawara Islands, an "eruption warning (peripheral sea area)" has been announced as an eruption that may affect the surrounding sea area.

The surrounding area is a little more active, with discoloration of the sea surface being observed due to volcanic activity.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for vigilance in the surrounding waters, as a small submarine eruption is expected.

No warning Level 1 also recognizes risks

In addition, eruption warnings have not been announced among active volcanoes nationwide, and there are volcanoes with an eruption alert level of 1, but these are active volcanoes that have repeatedly erupted in the past.

Last year, an eruption occurred at Mt. Asama or Satsuma Iwojima at Level 1, and the level was raised immediately after.

Even at the lowest eruption alert level, one needs to be reminded that sudden eruptions can occur without significant warning.
