Summary of volcanoes nationwide (December) Crater warning around 9 volcanoes January 14 21:21

The Japan Meteorological Agency announced on December 14 the status of active volcanoes nationwide from December to January last year and points to watch out for. As eruptions and volcanic activity are increasing, nine volcanoes nationwide have been issued "Crater around the crater" and one submarine volcano has been issued an "Eruption alert (peripheral sea area)".

9 volcanoes around the crater

The crater warning has been announced that future eruptions may affect the area around the crater and near the residential area,
草 “Shiranesan” of Kusatsu Shiraneyama in Gunma Prefecture,
▽ Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture,
「" Shinmoedake "of the Kirishima Mountains on the prefectural border between Kagoshima and Miyazaki,
▽ Sakurajima, Kuchierabujima, Satsuma Iwojima, Suwanosejima, Kagoshima Prefecture,
▽ There are 9 volcanoes in total, “Nishinoshima” and “Iwojima” in the Ogasawara Islands.

Eruption caution level 3 is 2 volcanoes

Among them, there is a possibility that the impact may occur near the place of residence, and eruption caution level 3, which indicates "Iriyama restriction", has been announced on "Sakurajima" and "Kuchierabujima".

<Kuchierabujima>
An eruption occurred on Kuchierabujima on January 11, and the plume rose 2000 meters from the crater and entered the clouds. Eruptions have been observed on Kuchierabu Island since February 2, last year. Volcanic earthquakes have temporarily increased in Kuchierabujima, and the amount of volcanic gas released per day continues to be high, and volcanic activity has increased. The Japan Meteorological Agency calls on eruption alert level 3 to be cautious of large cinders and pyroclastic flows approximately 2 km from the crater, and caution for pyroclastic flows from the crater to the shore of Mt. Is.

<Sakurajima>
Eruptions continue to occur at Minamidake summit crater in Sakurajima. In December, 71 eruptions were observed, of which 49 were explosive eruptions. Volcanic plumes rose up to 3300 meters from the crater and entered the clouds, with large cinders reaching the 4th station up to 1300 to 1700 meters from the crater. Emissions of volcanic gas remained high. The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for warning of large volcanic blocks and pyroclastic flows within a range of approximately 2 km from Minamidake summit crater and Showa crater, as eruptions may continue to occur around Minamidake summit crater.

Eruption caution level 2 is 5 volcanoes

Eruption alert level 2, where access to the area around the crater is regulated,
▽ “Shirane Mountain” of Kusatsu Shirane Mountain,
▽ "Asoyama",
「" Shinmoedake "of the Kirishima Mountains,
▽ "Satsuma Iwo Jima",
5It has been announced at five volcanoes in Suwanosejima.

<Shinmoedake>
At Shinmoedake in the Kirishima Mountains, the eruption alert level was reduced from 2 to 1 on December 20, but thereafter, volcanic earthquakes whose epicenter just below the crater temporarily increased. For this reason, the Japan Meteorological Agency raised the eruption alert level again to 2 on January 2 and called for alerting large cinders within 2 km of the crater and pyroclastic flows within 1 km of the crater.

<Mt. Aso>
Eruptions continue at Mt. Aso at Nakadake No. 1 crater. The amplitude of the volcanic tremor has been a little large, and has repeatedly fluctuated, such as temporarily increasing. The amount of volcanic gas released per day is extremely high, from 2100 to 4000 tons, and the state of volcanic activity continues to increase. The Japan Meteorological Agency is wary of large cinders and pyroclastic flows within a distance of about 1 km from Nakadake No. 1 crater, and instructs local governments not to enter dangerous areas.

<Satsuma Iwo Jima>
No eruptions have been detected since November 3 at Satsuma Iwo Jima. In December, a white plume rose 1200 meters from the crater. Thermal activity has continued to increase over the long term, with high-temperature volcanic gases appearing in clouds and volcanic plumes, with occasional red fires. The Japan Meteorological Agency calls for alerting large cinders, approximately one kilometer from the crater.

<Shirane Mountain of Kusatsu Shirane Mountain>
At "Shirane" in Mt. Kusatsu-Shirane, volcanic earthquakes have slightly increased in the shallow area near Yugama since early September, and tilt changes indicating expansion in shallow areas of Yugama have been observed. The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for vigilance against large cinders, approximately one kilometer from the Yugama crater, as small phreatic eruptions may continue to occur.

<Suwanosejima>
Active eruption activity continues at the Mitake crater on Suwanose Island. 23 eruptions occurred in December, 10 of which were explosive eruptions. Volcanic plumes rose up to 800 meters from the crater, with large cinders reaching 600 meters from the crater. The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for caution over large cinders within a range of approximately one kilometer from the crater, as it may continue to cause eruptions affecting the crater.

2 volcanoes with no level warning

Although no eruption warning level has been introduced, "Nishinoshima" and "Iwo Jima" in the Ogasawara Islands have been announced with "Around the crater warning".

<Nishinoshima>
In Nishinoshima, intermittent eruptions and lava flows have been observed since December. On December 15, observations from above the Japan Coast Guard revealed that a new crater was opened to the north of the pyroclastic cone, and that lava was flowing northwest to reach the sea. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a new warning around the crater indicating "danger of entering the mountain" on December 16, and extended the area requiring caution to approximately 2.5 km from the summit crater. We are calling out for large cinders and lava flows.

<Iwojima>
At Iwo Jima, where a seafloor eruption was estimated to have occurred in September, volcanic activity was somewhat active, with fluctuations indicating ground uplift and a rise in ground temperature throughout the island. The Japan Meteorological Agency has warned that eruptions that could affect the area around the crater may occur.

"Fukutokuoka noba" "eruption warning (surrounding sea area)"

At the submarine volcano Fukutokuoka Noba near the Ogasawara Islands, an eruption warning (surrounding sea area) has been announced as an eruption that may affect the surrounding sea area. The surrounding area is somewhat active, with discoloration of the sea surface observed due to volcanic activity. The Japan Meteorological Agency has called for vigilance in the surrounding waters, as a small submarine eruption is expected.

No warning, level 1 also recognizes risks

In addition, eruption warnings have not been announced among active volcanoes nationwide, and there are volcanoes with an eruption alert level of 1, but these are active volcanoes that have repeatedly erupted in the past. Last year, an eruption occurred at Mt. Asama and Satsuma Iwo Jima at Level 1, and the level was raised immediately after. Even at the lowest eruption alert level, one needs to be reminded that sudden eruptions can occur without significant warning.
