Electric driving is gaining ground. Major brands are investing massively in the development of plug-in cars with a large operating radius and the latest technological gadgets. What does the future hold?
On the world stage, the Netherlands is a frontrunner in the field of electric mobility: in relative terms, the Netherlands has by far the most charging points. Moreover, since 2017 more fully electric cars than hybrids have been sold, last year 25,065 and 4,094 respectively.
In other words: the future looks bright for electric cars and therefore for the environment. A car powered by electricity does not emit CO2 while driving. Innovative production techniques and the use of renewable energy must ensure that the car industry becomes more sustainable.
The trend is clearly visible online: on AutoScout24, the largest car platform in the Netherlands and Europe, thousands of electric used cars are waiting for a new owner. The BMW i3, Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen E-Golf lead the dance on the second-hand car market, followed by the Renault ZOE, Tesla Model S and Jaguar I-Pace.
In 2017, Volkswagen set itself the goal of presenting at least 30 electric cars by 2025. The first model from the so-called ID.-series is coming on the market next year: the compact Volkswagen ID.3. After that, the German car manufacturer wants to push ahead quickly. The production of the ID.Crozz, a crossover SUV, is planned for 2020. The ID.Buzz, a futuristic variant of the old Volkswagen van, is to roll off the assembly line from 2022 onwards.
View into the future
Tesla is without a doubt at the forefront of electric and autonomous driving. The American car manufacturer wants to continue the success of the Tesla Model 3 with the introduction of a new Roadster and the Tesla Model Y in 2020. CEO Elon Musk has also announced that Tesla will unveil an electric pick-up truck in November.
Renault looks a lot further ahead with the EZ trilogy presented last year. The three autonomous concept cars - EZ-GO, EZ-PRO and EZ-ULTIMO - are designed to increase the efficiency and safety of passenger and freight transport in the increasingly busy (inner) cities. Self-driving vehicles are no longer a future: in terms of infrastructure and laws and regulations, while there is still a world to be gained, several manufacturers are at the forefront of a transport revolution.
