Typhoon Special Oyster Major Damage Miyagi Matsushimacho Oct. 15 15:00

Due to the typhoon, in Miyagi Prefecture, there is damage to the local oysters such as the aquaculture facility being broken by wind and waves.

Miyagi Prefecture has the second largest production of oysters in the country, and is well-cultivated in various locations along the coast.

One of them is that in Matsushima Town, the skeleton of a farming facility called “Oyster Rack” that hangs oysters on a rope and hangs in the sea has been damaged by wind and waves one after another.

Shozo Akama's farm in Matsushima Bay had twelve oyster shelves, but one sunk into the seabed due to a typhoon, six skeletons were broken, and oyster damage was about 40% of the total. It means to go up.

Mr. Akama said, “It was a shame and painful because we expected the weather to be mild in the summer of this year. I would like to rush to repair and take care of the remaining oysters and nurture them.”

In addition to this, in Matsushima Town, “Kakigoya” where customers freely boil and eat oysters was also inundated.

“Kakiya” operated by the local tourism association is located right by the sea, and about 40 cm above the floor was flooded by the influence of high waves and heavy rain.

The oyster hut was refraining from opening at the end of this month due to the season, and the staff came out early on the morning of the 15th, and was forced to clean the dishes and floors that were in the water.

One of the staff members said, “Everything is soaked in water. I want to clean it in order for many people to taste the oysters of Matsushima.”
