The interior of the school building was released to the press before the construction work to preserve it as an earthquake disaster remains at the former Kadowaki Elementary School in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, which was damaged by the tsunami and fire caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The former Kadowaki Elementary School in Ishinomaki City was inundated by the tsunami of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and the first floor of the three-story school building was inundated.

Until now, access to the school building was restricted, but the inside of the school building was opened to the press only on the 9th, before the maintenance work to preserve it as an earthquake disaster remains began.

Inside, the damage from the tsunami and fire was left as it was, the walls on the second floor were burnt black, the ceiling fell off and the framework was exposed.

In addition, a school bag with sand was left in the corridor on the first floor, and shoes remained in a part of the box.

Maintenance work will begin on the 15th of this month, and the city plans to demolish both ends of the school building due to problems such as maintenance costs and earthquake resistance.

In addition, after the opening in the next fiscal year, the school building will be closed off and will be shown from the “observation building” that will be built next to it.

Mr. Yukinobu Shibuya, Director of the Ishinomaki Earthquake Tradition Promotion Office, said, “It is a precious remains of tsunami and fire that I want to convey to the future generations of the disaster.”
