The topic of the day: Terror in Sri Lanka

After the serious attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday, the investigators are looking for the backers. Recordings of surveillance cameras show the alleged perpetrators shortly before the attacks. Meanwhile, there were already dozens of arrests of possible accomplices. The terrorist militia "Islamic State" has claimed the attack on Tuesday - without presenting any evidence.

The incident severely shook the island nation off China ten years after the end of the civil war. However, the terrorists should rather have been concerned to cause terror outside of Sri Lanka, such as in Europe or the US: "The scene is Sri Lanka, the goal is the West," writes my colleague Christoph Sydow in his analysis.

This is also in line with an assumption by Sri Lanka's Deputy Defense Minister: The attacks are in retaliation for Christchurch. In the New Zealand city, 50 believers were killed in a mosque attack in mid-March.

The violence in Sri Lanka also affects tourism. Travelers ask themselves many questions after the attacks, we answer the most important ones. And China should also keep an eye on developments on the island. Beijing invests a lot in the country - and Sri Lanka pays a high price for it.

The number of the day: 94.8

According to a calculation by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research, the life expectancy of girls born this year is 94.8 years on average. In newborn boys, the value is 88.6 years. Increased life expectancy means that significantly more people will reach the age of 100 years. This applies to every third newborn girl and more than one in ten newborn boys. Almost three weeks ago, the World Health Organization published a global study explaining why men live shorter lives than women.

What you can see: Some colleagues in our Hamburg editorial office are already very excited. In the evening, HSV plays at RB Leipzig the first DFB Cup semi-final (20.45 clock, live ticker SPIEGEL ONLINE, TV: ARD). The Hamburg are against the Bundesliga, which continues to develop rapidly, clear outsiders. Nevertheless, the cup season for the second division is already a success: As far as this time, the HSV last came ten years ago - but then failed to Werder Bremen. And who knows, maybe the Northern rival will be in the final this time? Werder receives in the second semi-final on Wednesday Bayern.
