The Sudanese Army Commander, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, told his forces that the army will continue to press to control more territory after the most significant progress it achieved in the 11-month-long war against the Rapid Support Forces, amid mutual bombardment today in several areas of the capital, Khartoum.

Yesterday, Tuesday, army forces took control of the headquarters of the National Radio and Television Corporation in Omdurman, which is located on the other bank of the Nile River and represents part of the capital, Khartoum.

Although broadcasts from the radio and television building stopped, the advance expanded the army's influence across the old city center of Omdurman, which observers considered strategically important;

Because the area has military bases and represents a transit point for supplies to the Rapid Support Forces.

Witnesses told Reuters that they saw destroyed vehicles belonging to the Rapid Support Forces and the bodies of fighters from the Rapid Support Forces near the radio and television complex on Wednesday.

Al-Burhan message for quick support

Al-Burhan told soldiers at the Corps of Engineers base in Omdurman late Tuesday evening, “Our message to the Rapid Support rebels is that the armed forces and regular military services will pursue you everywhere, as well as the citizens, until complete victory is achieved.”

Al-Burhan added, according to a statement issued today, Wednesday, that the army will continue to fight the Rapid Support Forces in other parts of the capital, in the Darfur region in western Sudan, and in the Gezira state, south of Khartoum, areas where the Rapid Support Forces made rapid progress late last year, “until complete victory is achieved.” .

The army published a video clip showing Al-Burhan stopping in a convoy of four-wheel drive vehicles with heavily armed guards to eat Ramadan iftar with residents on the side of a road in Omdurman.

The army indicated that it would not take into account international appeals for a ceasefire during the month of Ramadan unless the Rapid Support Forces agreed to a major military withdrawal.

Bombing of rapid support sites

Al Jazeera's correspondent in Sudan reported that the army forces bombed with heavy artillery the sites of the Rapid Support Forces south of Khartoum, in addition to sites west and south of the city of Omdurman, while the Rapid Support Forces bombed central Khartoum and the vicinity of the General Command of the Sudanese Army.

This mutual bombardment between the two sides comes after violent battles that took place yesterday in the center and east of the city of Omdurman, which ended with the army taking control of the headquarters of the government radio and television corporation.

The Sudanese army posted pictures on its Facebook account of drones that it said targeted military vehicles of the Rapid Support Forces in Omdurman.

According to the army, the targeting operation took place while the Rapid Support Forces were trying to escape from the cordon imposed by the army forces around the lieutenants’ area and the radio and television buildings, as the army described.

Battles have been taking place in Sudan since April 2023 between the army forces led by the President of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces led by Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), who was Vice-President of the Sovereignty Council.

Last Friday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan during the month of Ramadan, with the situation deteriorating in the country as millions of people are threatened with famine.
