Test alarm in the Chancellery: If the German government headquarters has to be evacuated in an emergency, the Chancellor and his team can move to an alternative headquarters - and continue government business there.

The employees of Olaf Scholz (SPD) rehearsed this emergency on Tuesday.

The interaction between authorities was practiced and the operational and functionality of the technical facilities was checked.

A government spokesman explained this when asked.

The “Tagesspiegel” had previously reported on the exercise.

The Chancellery does not provide any further details about the exercise

"In order to be able to continue to perform government functions in cases in which it becomes necessary to evacuate the Federal Chancellery's official buildings (e.g. accidents or emergency situations), the Federal Chancellery maintains an alternative headquarters," explained the spokesman.

The exercise was not based on any special findings from the security authorities "that could have given a concrete reason for this."

The spokesman did not provide any further details about the rehearsal, which had not been announced publicly, citing security reasons.

He also did not provide any information about the location of the alternative headquarters.

The question of whether Chancellor Scholz was involved in the exercise also remained unanswered - however, the head of government attended several public appointments in Baden-Württemberg on Tuesday.
