A maternity hospital in Split, Croatia, gave birth to twin girls on the evening of December 31. One was born at 23:59 p.m. and the other two minutes later at 0:01 a.m. January 1st. According to its director Marko Mimica, this is an unprecedented situation for this establishment, and very rare in the world.

Nature sometimes has incredible curiosities in store for us. A maternity hospital in Split, Croatia, experienced one on the evening of December 31, 2023. Twins, born two minutes apart, but one at 23:59 p.m. and the other at 0:01 a.m. The latter let out her first cry on January 1, 2024, while her sister was born on December 31... 2023.

Marko Mimica, the head of the maternity hospital, told Croatian media outlet HRT that he had never experienced such a situation before. "Sometimes twins are born around midnight, one a day earlier and the other the next day. But let that happen at the turn of the year... I've never seen anything like it."

This is a situation already seen in the United States seven years ago

Dr. Damir Roje, head of the perinatology department, also spoke of an "unusual situation", before giving a nod to the Croatian song Ovo Mi Je Škola ("This is my school") by the artist Gibonni, which evokes the case of twin girls born at midnight. "A beautiful situation in a happy family where a birthday will be celebrated on the 31st and another on the 1st," adds the professor. As is tradition in Croatia, the prefect of the region, Blaženko Boban, then visited the two girls and their mother, reports the media outlet Slobodna Dalmacija.

Although extremely rare, this unusual situation has occurred in the past, including in Glendale, Arizona, USA. Little Sawyer Shay, as reported by Ouest-France, was born on December 31, 2016, while his twin brother Everett was born on January 1, 2017.
