Hong Kong: Concerns over fate of South China Morning Post journalist

The Hong Kong Journalists' Association expressed concern on Friday (1 December) because it has been almost a month since one of its members, employed by the city's major English-language daily, has not been heard from. According to the Kyodo news agency, the latter disappeared the day after a report in Beijing.

According to the South China Morning Post, the newspaper for which Minnie Chan works, she has not disappeared, she is on "personal leave". Her family even reportedly warned the Alibaba-owned media outlet that she "needed time to settle a private matter." A statement that does not reassure her sisters and brothers.

The Hong Kong Journalists' Association said on Friday it was "deeply concerned" about the reporter's safety. Minnie Chan has been with the newspaper for 18 years. She is a specialist in diplomatic and defence issues. Among the latest reports is the dismissal at the end of July of two of the most senior leaders of the Rocket Force, the unit in charge of strategic missiles within the People's Liberation Army, followed by that of the defense minister last October.

According to the Kyodo news agency, Minnie Chan has not been reachable since she visited the Xiangshan Security Forum in Beijing. The three-day event ended on October 31. And since then, no news, apart from a mysterious post on the journalist's Facebook account showing photos of a vacation on November 11 but without answers to questions asked in the comments.
