The decision has been made by the Police Authority and applies from Wednesday.
"It is based on the current security situation that we have decided to introduce a bag ban at all major sporting events as of today. It is linked to the fact that the terrorist threat level is at a 4, says Buster Mirow, press secretary at the national media center at the police, to TT.
The police specify that the following sports leagues will be affected: the men's football league, the Superettan, the Swedish Cup, the SHL, the HockeyAllsvenskan, Hockeyettan, various forms of European games and national team matches in each sport. The ban is valid until further notice and also includes handbags.
Exceptions can be made
Furthermore, the police write that exceptions may be made for people who, for medical reasons, need to bring a bag into events. They also write that there will be "an individual assessment in each case if the event is classified as a major event".
Säpo: The threat level has not changed
The terrorist threat level was raised from a three to a four in August. If there has been any new information from the Swedish Security Service, Säpo, which means that the police have made a decision to ban bags, the Swedish Security Service does not want to say.
"We don't go into detail about what kind of information we share between each other. But the terrorist threat level is still at a four on the five-point scale, it has not changed, says Adam Isaksson Samara, press spokesperson at the Swedish Security Service to TT.
"Requires more resources"
Johan Lindvall, Secretary General of Swedish Professional Football Leagues (Sef), says that the decision cannot be questioned.
TT: How should it be enforced?
"This is completely fresh to us. The clubs basically have a good organisation for their matches, but this means that they need more resources. It will take a little longer for people to get into the games. It is important to point out that the clubs have no responsibility to take care of the bags that are carried in. Each individual must take responsibility for this," says Lindvall.
