Tunisian police on Tuesday arrested Free Destourian Party leader Abeer Moussa when she was filing a grievance with the police office in front of the presidential palace in Carthage, lawyer Nafie al-Araibi said.

Al-Araibi said that what happened was the kidnapping of his client in front of the presidential palace, "while she is being held at the La Goulette police station".

According to a recording posted by her assistant on Facebook, Abeer Moussa was kidnapped in front of the Carthage Palace.

In front of a police station in the suburb of La Goulette, dozens of angry Moussa supporters gathered with slogans against President Kais Saied. They chanted slogans "No fear, no terror. Abeer bint al-Shaab" and "Down with Kais Saied", and police forces cordoned off the place to prevent the arrival of protesters.

Abeer Moussa is a supporter of the late President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, who was overthrown by the 2011 revolution.

Over the past few months, Moussa and her party have led regular protests against President Saied, consistently calling him "the ruler by his order" and saying she does not recognize his decisions as illegal.

Moussa said in a video earlier in the day that she had gone to the presidential control office to file an appeal against a presidential decree.

She added that this step was necessary so that she could later file an appeal with the Administrative Court.

Tunisian authorities are currently arresting several political opponents, some of whom have gone on hunger strike.

The opposition accuses Kais Saied of exploiting the judiciary to liquidate his political opponents, reverse the gains of the 2011 revolution and return the country to the era of tyranny.
