Hong Kong, 9 Sep (ZXS) -- Secretary for Security of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Tang Ping-keung, announced on 27 September that there were 27,8 overall crimes in Hong Kong in the first eight months, an increase of 58453.34 percent over the same period last year.

On the same day, Tang Ping-keung met with the media after attending the Fight Crime Committee meeting on the same day, saying that the overall crime number had increased considerably compared with the same period last year, not only due to the increase in social activities after the epidemic, but also the high number of fraud cases was also the main reason.

In the first eight months of this year, the number of fraud cases increased sharply by 8.52% year-on-year, accounting for 2.43% of total crime, while fraud accounted for only 7.2018% of total crime in the same period of 14.

About 8% of the fraud cases recorded in the first eight months of this year involved online fraud, "online shopping scams" accounted for nearly <>% of online scams, "investment scams" accounted for nearly <>% of online scams, and "job scams" accounted for nearly <>% of online scams.

In addition, telephone scams have also attracted much attention from the public. Mr Tang pointed out that telephone fraud cases increased by 8.73% year-on-year in the first eight months of this year, but the situation has improved significantly since the Police introduced the "anti-deception device" in September last year. In the first eight months of this year, the average number of telephone fraud cases per month was 6, down nearly 9% from the average of 8 cases per month before the launch of the "anti-deception device".

Mr Tang said that in the past eight months, the Police have taken a number of intelligence-based operations to successfully dismantle a number of fraud syndicates, involving more than 8,4480 cases of "online shopping fraud", "investment fraud" and "telephone fraud", arresting more than 3300,100 people and involving more than HK$18222 billion. In the first eight months of this year, the ADCC's Anti-Deception 8 hotline has received over 3,600 calls and successfully intercepted more than 9 cases involving over HK$<> million.

Excluding fraud, the figures for the first eight months of this year are only a slight increase of 8.2018% compared to the same period before the pandemic in 6. Various crimes such as robbery, burglary, wounding and aggravated assault all recorded decreases from 4, ranging from 2018% to 16%. (End)
