Catalan pharmacies will distribute free of charge from the first half of 2024 menstrual cups, absorbent panties and cloth pads to women, non-binary people and trans men who menstruate through a collaboration agreement between the Ministry of Equality and Feminisms of the Generalitat and the Consell de Col·legis Farmacèutics de Catalunya (CCFC), which has an item of 8.5 million.
It was announced on Thursday by the Minister of Equality and Feminisms, Tània Verge, after signing the agreement with the president of the CCFC, Jordi Casas, at the headquarters of the Col·legi de Farmacèutics de Barcelona, to guarantee menstrual equity in an "unprecedented action" in the world that will potentially reach 2.5 million people.
Those interested will have to present to one of the pharmacies that are part of the project an individual and non-transferable QR code that they will find in the mobile application La Meva Salut and will be able to choose one of the three products they offer depending on the one that best suits their needs.
Verge explained that the measure pursues three objectives: social justice, to combat menstrual poverty; climate justice, to reduce the 750 million waste generated each year in non-reusable menstrual products, and gender justice, to end "myths and stereotypes".
Casas believes that this measure reinforces the role of pharmacists as "agents of health, proximity and trust" and the Minister has planned that all or almost all pharmacies in Catalonia can participate, a total of 3,272 offices.
