A feeling dominates on the front page of the French press, that of "dread". The knife attack on 8 June targeting several children in Annecy caused shock. The regional dailies L'Alsace, Midi Libre and La Montagne speak of an "appalling" act. "Abject" for the daily La Marseillaise.

Libération describes a city in "shock" where nothing will ever be the same again. For Le Figaro, it's time for questions. How could this happen? Who is responsible? The newspaper questions the profile of the perpetrator of the stabbings: a Syrian refugee, who was granted asylum in Sweden in 2013 and arrived in France in 2022. While several victims are still in absolute emergency, "the right and the extreme right compete for political recuperation" headlines Le Monde. Yesterday, in the National Assembly, where the pension reform was debated one last time, the climate was electric. La Voix du Nord reports the words of Aurore Bergé, the patron saint of Renaissance deputies, who wondered if it was appropriate to debate at a time when the country was "overwhelmed by terror". Opposition outcry which accuses him of having instrumentalized the tragedy of Annecy to close the sequence of retreats.

The press is firing a red ball against this political recuperation. It is "pitiful", writes Liberation. "As soon as the Syrian nationality of the assailant became known, the opportunity was too good to put the issue of immigration back on the table." The newspaper, La Croix, usually measured, sharply criticizes this recovery and asks politicians to keep quiet. "In the face of the pain of the victims, only silence can be expressed."

The information is also commented outside the French borders, in the British press (Daily Mail, Daily Express, Metro). The Emirati daily The National also reports on this event. Closer to home, the Belgian daily Le Soir headlines "After the shock, the controversy". And for the Swiss daily Le Temps, this "nightmare reminds the France of its worst traumas".

In Ukraine, the destruction of the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric dam continues to have dramatic consequences for local populations. ABC gives a concrete example by publishing on the front page a photo of the city of Kherson under water, where residents are forced to evacuate their homes urgently. The destruction of the dam could have "devastating consequences" for the environment according to Le Monde, which evokes the fear of ecocide. Several thousand fish died of asphyxiation, not to mention the probable contamination of several drinking water tanks.

Before leaving, this is the poster that all tennis fans have been waiting for. The team headlines on the"conflict of generations" between veteran Novak Djokovic (36) and Spanish prodigy, Carlos Alcaraz (20), world number 1, in the semifinals of the Roland-Garros tournament. In the absence of Rafael Nadal, injured, Carlos Alcaraz, hopes to win against an opponent, among the most brilliant of his generation. After the undivided reign of Rafael Nadal, a new Spanish era may open on the side of the Porte d'Auteuil.
